Solving the "MESSAGE HAS LINES TOO LONG FOR TRANSPORT" Error in Outlook

September 11, 2025 by Tomás Romero

The error "Message has lines too long for transport" occurs when your email client, like Outlook, sends a message with lines of text that exceed the character limit set by many mail servers. This is a standard protocol to ensure email compatibility and readability across different platforms.

To resolve this, you simply need to configure Outlook to automatically "wrap" text, breaking long lines into shorter, compliant ones. The industry best practice is to set this limit between 65 and 70 characters.

How to Configure Line Wrapping in Outlook

Follow these simple steps to fix the error:

  1. Open Outlook and navigate to the File tab in the top-left corner.
  2. Select Options from the side menu.
  3. In the Outlook Options window, click on the Mail category.
  4. Scroll down to the Message format section.
  5. Find the setting labeled Automatically wrap text at character and enter a value between 65 and 70.
  6. Click OK to apply the changes and close the window.

This configuration will ensure your outgoing emails are formatted correctly, preventing the error and improving readability for your recipients.
